According to Michael, the usual rebate for appliances is from $50 to $250, depending on the state. Rebate funds will be used up until February of 2010 so better move fast because funds will lower significantly long before the deadline. Appliance rebates are a result of federal move to foster energy efficiency and promote consumer spending. You should check with your state for details of the rebate program such as start date of purchase eligible for rebates.


Exchanging your old appliances with new ones helps save household energy. DOE stated that since 70% of a household energy is used up by appliances. New Energy Star-qualified appliances use up 1/3 less energy compared to older models.


Savings can be felt right away (i.e. replacing 1993 refrigerator model will give you a yearly savings of $65). Return of investment will be felt in just a few years.

Some states provide rebates for refrigerators and televisions only. Others may include water heaters and dishwashers. In Alabama, you can qualify for rebates from $25 to $150 on clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerator and air conditioners. You have to trade in your old appliance to qualify, and the schedule begins in April 2010. It will end a few weeks later.


California gives cash back for new clothes washer ($100), air conditioners ($50), and refrigerators ($50). Recycling is compulsory. Delaware will join the wagon and will provide retroactive rebates as much as $200.


Claiming rebates in Delaware requires you to fill out a form. Other states offer point-of-purchase rebates. You should save your receipts and Energy Star product labels. It only takes a couple of hours to examine and claim your cash backs.


Other Means to Save Money on Appliances


Utility companies provide cash back for households that use up less energy. Manufacturers and retailers provide rebates periodically for owners who agree to upgrade their appliances. Tax incentives for qualified energy upgrades or partial reimbursement of sales tax paid are available in other states. IRS provides tax credits for major appliances such as geothermal heat pumps.
